Founded in 1998, First Nations Technical Services Advisory Group Inc. (TSAG) is a not-for-profit provider of quality technical services and training for First Nations in Alberta. TSAG provides programming in the areas of asset management, water and wastewater management, environmental management, housing support services, fire prevention and protection, information technology services and youth initiatives.

TSAG is mandated by the Chiefs of Alberta and takes direction from a Chiefs Steering Committee and Board of Directors, which include representatives from Treaty 6, Treaty 7, and Treaty 8.

Position

Term: Full time, permanent

Reporting to the Data Management Project Lead and the Director of Lands and Environment, the Data Management Technician will work with First Nations to implement a digital data management and mapping system based on each Nation’s needs and capacity. The Data Management Technician will provide training and on-site support to participating First Nations, including support for organizing lands and infrastructure-related information. This position will involve a significant amount of travel throughout Alberta and potentially to other areas in Canada.

 

General Scope of Work

  • Work with First Nation lands, housing, and public works staff to understand current work flows and data management practices
  • Develop a plan and process for the import of lands, housing, and infrastructure data into a digital data management system,  which has been adapted to meet First Nation needs
  • Organize and import lands and infrastructure data into a digital data management system
  • Train First Nation staff on how to use the digital data management system
  • Liaise with project lead and software developer to continue adapting digital data management system to meet needs of current users

Responsibilities

  • Establish strong working relationship with First Nation clients at the community, tribal council, and regional/territorial levels.
  • Promote the use digital data management systems to First Nations and First Nation organizations.
  • Provide on-site training to First Nation staff and other users of the data management system
  • Organize and import lands and infrastructure data into community-based data management systems
  • Liaise with project lead and software developer to continue adapting digital data management system to meet needs of current users

Minimum Requirements 

  •  Bachelor degree or technical diploma with experience in GIS, data management, or related field
  • Understanding of First Nation lands, public works and housing program administration
  • Excellent interpersonal skills as well as written and spoken communication skills
  • Experience providing group and one-on-one training
  • Extensive experience with Microsoft Office suite, particularly Excel
  • Ability to travel, to work occasional weekend and overtime as required to meet program deadlines
  • Valid driver's license

 Desired skills and characteristics include but are not limited to:

  • Knowledge of cultural protocols, history, and cultural values of Indigenous peoples
  • Familiarity with SQL considered an asset
  • Bilingual (French and English) considered an asset
  • Community engagement experience considered an asset

 

Compensation

TSAG will offer a competitive compensation package including base salary, an extensive group insurance package, health care and dental coverage, a defined contribution pension up to 5% matched, and competitive vacation.
